    • What do "water-based" and "plant-based" mean exactly?

With our innovation of water-based, vegan and odour-neutral nail colours we've been able to completely rethink nail polish and cosmetics. Our unique formula is 55% water-based, lasts up to three days and is the perfect companion for life in the fast lane. To ensure your nail colour lasts longer, always seal the colour layer with a thin layer of our water-based top coat.

By popular demand, we've also come up with an alternative that lasts even longer – our plant-based formula offers the best compromise between the most natural ingredients possible and intense colour durability. Our plant-based nail colours are 82% plant-based and come from sources like manioc, maize and wheat. And with our plant-based Top&Base Coat this colour can last up to 7 days.

Whether water or plant-based, all gitti nail colours are both vegan and as natural as possible. Not only do they offer intense colours, but with ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E and calcium pantothenate, they'll also treat your nails to some well deserved TLC.

    • Can I use gitti nail colours without a base or top coat?

For maximum durability and extra shine, we suggest always sealing the colour layer, once dried, with a top coat. If you're in a hurry, you can of course apply the nail colours by themselves. But in this case, the colours won't last quite as long.

    • Can I combine water-based and plant-based colours together?

Yes, both formulas can be combined. However, for the best result, we recommend only using products of the same formula.

    • Do the plant-based nail colours last longer than the water-based ones?

How long our nail colours last on your nails depends on many factors: The condition of your nails or the demands on your hands throughout the day can influence how long the colour lasts. In our experience, colours last longer on smooth nails, which is why we recommend using the right base coat (with our plant-based nail colours). You can find detailed manicure tips on each product page in our online shop. But as a general rule, the water-based formula lasts up to three days, while the plant-based formula lasts up to seven.

    • Why aren't the plant-based nail colours odour-neutral like the water-based ones?

The scent of our plant-based formula is due to two specific ingredients: Ethyl Acetate and Butyl Acetate. Both function as solvents and ensure that water-soluble and oil-soluble components are evenly dispersed throughout the nail colour. You can find more information about all our ingredients in our glossary.

    • What's the best way to store my gitti nail colours?

To ensure our nail colours keep their intense colour for as long as possible, we recommend not diluting our nail colours with other liquids. Our nail colours are best stored in a cool place away from direct sunlight. We also recommend leaving the bottles open only for as long as necessary.

    • How can your nail colours best be disposed of?

Despite their innovative formulas, our nail colours shouldn't be disposed of with household waste. The packaging can be recycled by dissolving any remnants of colour from the bottle – pour a little nail polish remover into the bottle if necessary, and shake until any remaining colour has dissolved. Any colour remnants should be disposed of separately at a recycling point for hazardous waste. The cap can be recycled along with other plastics and the empty bottle can be disposed of in your usual glass recycling bin. If the polish has dried out completely, it can also be disposed of with your normal household waste.

    • Nail care

    • How do I best care for my nails and prevent them from becoming dry or brittle? Should I apply a treatment?

There are many causes for dry or brittle nails. And both external factors such as frequent handwashing and insufficient nail care as well as internal factors such as diet, nutrient supply or stress can play a role. But symptoms can of course be treated and prevented with the right care.

Our nail colours are enriched with nourishing active ingredients such as vitamins and calcium pantothenate. Compared to our water-based nail colours, our plant-based colours do contain solvents (ethyl acetate and butyl acetate), which can dry nails out, depending on their condition or if permanently used. Much like our skin, our nails also like to "breathe" in order to better regenerate. That's why we recommend having a few colour-free days or using a treatment, such as our probiotic nail serum. Our nail oil can also be used to nourish nails and sensitive cuticles. In comparison with conventional nail polish removers which often contain dehydrating solvents like acetone or ether, our base remover is completely natural and, thanks to its precious oils, nourishes nails at the same time.

Our nail serum is an intense treatment, which depending on the condition of your nails, should be applied once a day directly onto colour-free nails and then gently massaged. For thin and fragile nails, we recommend a two-week nail boosting treament during which you can apply the serum twice a day.
Our tip: Leave the serum on overnight, so that the nourishing ingredients can set to work even better.

    • How and when should I best use the nail oil?

In general, we recommend using our nail oil once a week. For overworked nails and very dry cuticles, you can also apply it several times a day. Place a small drop with the pipette on the lunula at the edge of your cuticle and gently massage in.
Our tip: Apply the nail oil to slightly damp skin, for example after washing your hands. This allows the nail oil's nourishing ingredients to be better absorbed.

If you choose to use the oil before applying nail colour, we recommend thoroughly washing your hands once it has been absorbed. This ensures there is no oily film, which could affect the durability of the nail colour. You can also use the nail oil after applying nail colour, which makes for an extra glow boost.

Our treatment also contains oat extract, which, thanks to its antioxidant properties, helps to balance and soothe stressed skin. Its energising tangy scent of orange, lavender and cedar wood also turns a hand massage into an uplifting experience.

    • Why did you decide to use an aluminium tube for the packaging of your hand treatment?

The sustainability of our packaging is of vital importance to us and a top priority. For every product, we carefully weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of all options, and we are of course always on the lookout for new innovations. You can find out more here.
For this hand treatment we deliberately chose an aluminium tube. Aluminium is light, extremely durable and the only material that can be continuously recycled without loss in quality. The recycling process is relatively uncomplicated, and only consumes 5% of the amount of energy required for the production of new aluminium. In Germany around 90% of all aluminium waste is recycled, while the recycling rate for plastics is only around 55%. The tube also prevents air from getting in, allowing our products to stay fresh for longer while also helping you to use the cream entirely and squeeze out every last drop.

    • What is so special about your Rinse-Free Cleanser?

With its refreshing citrus bergamot scent, our Rinse-Free Cleanser was developed during the current Covid pandemic. • Is the Rinse-Free Cleanser compatible with your nail colours?

We recommend always spraying the Rinse-Free Cleanser onto the palms of your hands and not directly onto nails, so as not to affect the durability of your nail colours. As the product is alcohol-based, it can lead to a slight separation of nail colour if applied directly to nails and the nail surface is then rubbed.

    • Ingredients & formulas

    • What's so special about vegan nail colours?

Our gitti nail colours are entirely vegan. When it comes to colour pigments we choose alternatives that are not obtained from animals, as it's often the colour and effect pigments in conventional nail polish that aren't vegan. Red shades are often made with carmine – or crushed scale insects. This non-vegan colour pigment is also used for pink, violet and brown shades among others. While glitter effects are often achieved with fish scales.

    • What does ISO 16128 mean? And how is it calculated?

The ISO 16128 standard increases transparency, especially for manufacturers of natural cosmetics, as there are currently no legal definitions for "natural" or "organic" for natural cosmetic products. Thanks to this standard, substances can be rated according to how natural or organic they are, allowing both single ingredients and end products to be easily compared.

At gitti we use this standard to calculate the percentage of both the natural ingredients and ingredients of natural origin. In order to calculate the natural value of our formulas, we multiply the percentage of a single ingredient by its natural index score and then add the values together. The natural score of raw materials ranges between 0 and 1. Natural ingredients like plant-based oils, for example, are given a score of 1, while purely synthetic ingredients, like silicone oils for example, have a score of 0.

    • Is gitti "x-free"? Which ingredients does gitti choose not to use?

We have a conscious approach to developing our formulas: We don't use synthetic or potentially harmful ingredients, replacing them instead with natural alternatives. All gitti products are made from high-quality ingredients, are produced ethically in the EU, and are 100% vegan and eco-friendly.

We have a clear goal for our nail colours: 100% natural formulas. We've already found replacements for a variety of ingredients found in conventional nail polish. There is however no consistent, official rating system for nail polish. "X-free" claims are most often used to express how many harmful ingredients a nail polish doesn't contain. But as every manufacturer has their own definition or can put their own list together, this claim can often be misleading and can be extended to include ingredients, which normally wouldn't be used in nail polish or that are already forbidden in the EU. We want to consciously distance ourselves from such misleading uses of the "x-free" definition.
All of our nail colours are 19-free, vegan and eco-friendly. That means the following 19 harmful or potentially harmful ingredients are not contained in our nail colours:

Formaldehyde-releasers, Toluene, Phthalates, Camphor, Animal-derived Ingredients, Parabens, Added Perfumes, Sulfonamide, Xylene, Acetone, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-3, Hydroquinones, Colophonium, Mineral Oils & Waxes, Microplastics (according to UNEP's 2015 definition), Diethylhexyl Adipate, EDTA, Triphenyl Phosphate

Transparency is very important to us. Which is why it's only natural for us to explain what's in our products and what isn't. You can find more information in our glossary and in the nitrocellulose article.

    • What is nitrocellulose and is this ingredient harmful?

Nitrocellulose is one of the main components in conventional solvent-based nail polish. This film-forming ingredient is responsible for the typical texture of nail polish as well as the durability of nail colours on the nail. At the moment it's not possible to replace this binder in our plant-based formula, as it's essential for the product's long-lasting durability and uniform colouration. Nitrocellulose is often criticised and is considered to be a potentially harmful substance. By itself nitrocellulose is a safe ingredient. Critically, however, in the production of pigmented cosmetics, nitrocellulose is often combined with stearalkonium bentonite to ensure the best solubility and an even distribution of colour pigments. The reaction of these two elements can lead to the production of nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are organic substances found in many cosmetics and food (e.g. meat, fish and dried spices) among other things. They can even be formed in the body during digestion. Nitrosamines have been examined and tested for many years. It's these nitrosamines that are suspected of potentially causing cancer – not nitrocellulose itself. The EU cosmetic regulation (EU NO. 1223/2009) limits nitrosamines in cosmetic goods to minimal levels. At gitti we prevent this reaction from happening by using the safe, plant-based inhibitor tocopherol. This prevents the development of nitrosamines during the production and bottling of our nail colours. We also produce our nail colours in cool conditions, as nitrosamines can occur more easily at higher temperatures. This is a truly innovative technique and a solution we're extremely proud of! In addition to EU regulations for cosmetics, which we of course adhere to, we're pleased to be able to offer you a safe product. However, should you feel better avoiding this ingredient completely, then we would recommend our nitrocellulose-free water-based formula.

In addition to EU regulations for cosmetics, which we of course adhere to, we're pleased to be able to offer you a safe product. However, should you feel better avoiding this ingredient completely, then we would recommend our nitrocellulose-free water-based formula.
Do you want to find out more about our ingredients? Then please click here for more information on nitrocellulose and here for more information on the ingredients.

    • Why is natural nitrocellulose better than the synthetic kind?

We want to replace as many artificial ingredients with plant-based alternatives as possible. That's why, when it comes to nitrocellulose, we use the plant-based variety. Our nitrocellulose is obtained from cellulose, or plant fibres – more specifically, nitrated cotton fibres that create compounds of chemical bonds (esters). Nitrocellulose that has been obtained from cotton fibre also has a great advantage over the artificial alternative – its carbon footprint. Fewer CO2 emissions are produced in the sustainable manufacture of this natural alternative than in the production of synthetic nitrocellulose, and by choosing this we're able to make a positive contribution to both the planet and our environment.

    • Do gitti formulas contain microplastics?

For gitti nail colours to last on your nails and not to wash off, we use so-called binders. Although, chemically they are considered plastics, according to the German Environment Agency's own definition, they are not microplastics. In the future, however, we aim to be able to offer you a 100% natural formula without any synthetic ingredients like plastics.

    • Do gitti products contain hormone-disrupting, toxic or potentially harmful substances?

All of the ingredients in gitti products fulfil all of the European Cosmetic Regulation's guidelines and are safe in the concentrations used. Legal conformity is ensured both through extensive legislation and the safety assessments of the experts we work closely with. We also closely follow all scientific discussions on the subject, as the safety of our customers is our top priority. Unlike conventional nail polishes, we also choose not to use 19 potentially harmful ingredients, replacing them instead with alternatives which we believe are better.

    • Why don't your nail colours get a "green" or non-harmful rating in some rating apps?

Rating websites and ingredient apps give useful advice, especially when it comes to living a more conscious lifestyle. This is useful when potentially harmful substances or dubious ingredients are shown to be contained in cosmetics. The review system behind it however does also have its weaknesses. It's worth emphasising first and foremost that the rating of ingredients takes place within the app itself. The criteria used for ratings are not always objective or meaningful and sometimes lack valid sources. For the most part, the app doesn't differentiate between ingredients derived from synthetic or natural sources. Whether and to what extent the raw material is produced sustainably, organically or ethically is also not taken into consideration.
Additionally, rating platforms evaluate neither the concentration of an ingredient nor where or how it is used. Some ingredients are potentially harmful if taken orally or inhaled, but much less so if not used in this way. With our nail colours, for example, it's important to note that nails have a thicker and therefore much less permeable barrier (up to 0.75mm) than skin (around 0.04mm).
Furthermore, all synthetic polymers are rated as "dubious", mainly because of their poor biodegradability and potential risk to the environment. This is a very generalised rating, as no connection is made to the probability of these synthetic polymers actually making it into the environment.

In any case, we guarantee that all gitti formulas have been checked and evaluated to make sure that they are safe for our customers under normal and foreseeable conditions of use and therefore fit for market. Just as we're constantly working on improving our formulas, these apps are also continuously working on optimising their reviewing systems.
